MODERN ART & DESIGN AUCTION
May 19, 2002
On May 19, 2002, Los Angeles Modern Auctions, in conjunction with Butterfields Los Angeles, held the Modernist Design from the Collection of Michael and Gabrielle Boyd auction. The sale featured 485 lots from one of the most prominent collections of Mid-Century Modern design in the country. The Santa Monica-based modernist collectors, Michael and Gabrielle Boyd, spent a lifetime amassing a near-perfect assortment of rare 20th century design and fine art.
In 1998, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art exhibited the Boyd's comprehensive survey of avant-garde modernist design and architectural artifacts in the Aaron Betsky curated show "Sitting on the Edge." Many of the items in this auction were featured in that landmark exhibition.
The auction featured an extensive collection of mid-century chairs including some very rare pieces in pristine condition, including: a Frank Lloyd Wright lounge chair designed for the Robert Wynn house, a Frank Gehry cardboard side chair, a Warren McArthur "Biltmore" armchair, various Verner Panton chairs, an Osvaldo Borsani "Tecno" adjustable lounge chair, and a Gerrit Rietveld "Zig Zag" chair with perforated back.
Additionally, the sale included other mid-century gems such as a K.E.M. Webter music cabinet custom designed for Walt Disney, a Jean Prouve ; Le Corbusier painted sheet steel bureau from 1950, the Ilya Bolotosky acrylic Pale, Yellow, and Blue Tondo; (1970), a Charles and Ray Eames custom "ESU" walnut hanging file cabinet for the writer Lawrence Strickland, and an Isamu Noguchi "Rudder" table.
