MODERN ART & DESIGN AUCTION
December 16, 2012
After an exceptional sale in October and due to a steady influx of modern material, Los Angeles Modern Auctions (LAMA) announces Part Two of the 20th Anniversary Auction, which is scheduled for Sunday, December 16, 2012, 12 p.m. (PST).
This expertly curated auction of 436 lots featured a rare Chess Table by Isamu Noguchi complete with sculpted aluminum tray and original finish; over ten works by Robert Rauschenberg, including Lattice (Hoarfrost), a unique textile collage from 1975; an Alexander Calder brooch and a Jean Arp brooch, each with outstanding provenance; in addition to a group of 15 American Arts & Crafts designs, a great majority of which were gifts from Max Palevsky, sold by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) to benefit future acquisitions. The sale also featured a comprehensive grouping of over 50 lots of Art Deco furniture, lighting, and decorative objects from c. 1920 – 1940.
Additional Fine Art highlights included a selection of Hard Edge School paintings, including four works by Karl Benjamin; as well as prints and multiples by Joan Miró, Tom Wesselmann, Richard Diebenkorn, and Andy Warhol, including the latter artist’s Vote McGovern, Truman Capote, Jane Fonda, and Mick Jagger. Design highlights included a rare Greta Grossman table, bookshelf, and floor lamp, a selection of 13 designs by Gustav Stickley, a George Nakashima coffee table, an R.M. Schindler chair from the Sachs apartment, a Boris Lacroix tea set, and a K.E.M. Weber chair from the Sommer commission, as well as a Jean Royère table for Gouffé.
